Early runs see Elgin past Chickasha

The Chickasha baseball team fell just one run short in the Washita Valley Classic consolation game Saturday, getting a run back in the seventh before losing 3-2.

The Owls struck early with three runs in the top of the first. While Chickasha’s defense held up well after the first inning, they were unable to put enough hits together to produce the runs they needed. A late charge by Chickasha ended just short of enough.

Brooks Bush and Brock Henderson were the only players who finished the game with a run. The Chickasha batters had trouble hitting off the curve ball the entire game, with Elgin pitchers striking out seven batters.

All of Elgin’s runs were scored in the first inning. Austin Bartosovsky, Zane Rulon, and Cale Jung all came across home plate for the Owls.

As the game went on, Chickasha cut down on the mistakes reducing their errors and making plenty of defensive plays in the outfield and on base. Among the top performers for Chickasha was senior Cade Morris.

His diving grab in the fifth at center field kept Elgin from adding to their total, and it was also a sign the injury to his ribs suffered in practice was much less bothersome. That injury had also kept him off the mound, but Morris later stepped on in the seventh for a three up, three down that left Chickasha within sight of a comeback.

Chickasha entered the consolation game after going 3-0 in pool play, including two run-rule wins. After battling blow for blow against El Reno in a late Friday game — it was delayed two hours due to an earlier contest going into extra innings — Chickasha took a 12-4 win into Saturday afternoon.

Even with the tournament hosting duties, there was the not so small matter of the Carl Albert series hanging over Chickasha throughout those three days. After Monday's away game, district-rival Titans come to Elliott Field starting at 4:30 p.m. tonight.
