Bulldogs blank Wayne

The Minco Bulldogs dominated their game against Wayne Friday night, winning 44-0, and showing an effective use of their unique two quarterback system.

Minco looked strong from the start of the game, scoring on their first possession. Senior quarterback Jacob Overton had a breakout game, with two rushing touchdowns and one punt return for a touchdown. Overton also had a few big runs and broke many of the Wayne defender’s tackles.

Junior running back Ringo Garrett also scored a rushing touchdown, and Sophomore quarterback Hunter Jones made some good plays in the first half, converting on third and fourth downs.

The offensive line and the defense also deserve credit for the big win. The line created holes all night and allowed the quarterbacks and running backs to move the ball effectively. They used their running ability to control the clock and kept converting third downs.

Minco’s coaches also used aggressive play calling from start to finish. They called two on-side kicks - one of which they recovered in the first quarter - ran a fake field goal for a two-point conversion, and ran plays on multiple fourth downs.

The second half mimicked the first with Minco continuing running the ball using multiple formations, running backs, and quarterback-designed runs.

Late in the third quarter, Senior running back Matt Atkinson scored a rushing touchdown and in the fourth quarter Hunter Jones threw a deep pass for a touchdown to Junior Asher Baade.

Wayne never seemed to be able to get into an offensive during the game. Other than a few choice plays, Minco’s defensive line was able to penetrate Wayne’s offensive line and swarm their running backs.

Wayne also had a few issues on defense missing multiple chances for tackles in the backfield and the line of scrimmage.

They also failed to recover critical fumbles and make interceptions when their defensive backs were in position to make a play at the ball.

Minco’s next game will be away against Maysville Sept. 20.
