Alex's 8-man season started off nicely last week, although for a while it looked like it might not.
Down 36-8 early against Weleekta last Friday, the Longhorns mounted a comeback and scored 48 straight points to get themselves off to winning ways in Class B District 2.
"We started off a little slow," head coach Matt Brand said. "I'll take the blame for setting up our defense wrong. But, we made the adjustments and came out with a little more intensity to get the win."
Their next task is another away game, and this time the Paoli Pugs present the challenge to Matt Brand's team. The Pugs' offense offers another difficult task for the Alex defense. They're main goal will be stopping Joe Gibson, who last year rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 24 touchdowns.
While keeping Gibson and Paoli's top players in mind, Brand said he and his team are confident they can stick to their game plan and get the job done.
"They've got a couple of kids that are good football players," Brand said. "But, we're pretty confident we can come out, play our game and do well."
The opening of the 2013 season is looking good for the Longhorns so far, and they'll need that momentum next week when they welcome the number two team in the state Fox. Meanwhile, the confidence is flowing.
"I was a little skeptical when we were down in that first game," Brand said. "But, with the way we played in the second half, we can beat anybody."
