Chicks finish as Mustang finalists

MUSTANG —

Chickasha baseball had a productive weekend in Mustang, falling just short of winning a tournament when they lost 6-3 to the hosts on Sunday.

"They have a good baseball team," head coach Brad Gore said of Mustang. "We're starting to come around on a few things. Our pitching is more stable, our defense is better; it's just like any summer where we've gotten a little better in each game."

The Fightin' Chicks began their journey to the final on Friday, beating Westmoore and Mustang 2. Saturday saw them beat McCloud, which gave them a ticket to the final against another Mustang team.

Other than getting more games under their belt, playing in Mustang gave some of the Fightin' Chicks a new experience playing on synthetic grass. The Mustang High School infield is turf, and there are plenty of differences the players have to get used to.

"It is different; the ball is faster on turf," Gore said. "The kids played well once they got used to it. It's a good experience for them to play on turf."

The Fightin' Chicks are in the middle of their Red Dirt League summer play, as they played Tuttle at home on Monday and will travel to Love Grove this evening for a 6 p.m. game. They wrap up this week's play with home games against Piedmont Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
