CHS librarian tackles old stigmas for homecoming

As homecoming approaches, Chickasha High School Librarian Angela Widener is making an effort to show Vietnam War veterans the respect they didn't get when they first came home.

"We want to get a call out to all Vietnam vets who live in Chickasha," Widener said. "We plan to have a float to honor them."

Widener said the distance from the Vietnam War allows people to separate the soldiers from the slew of negative stigmas associated with the conflict.

"They thought of it as helping the U.S.," she said. "They were just doing their duty. When they came back, it was a very different world for them. They never received the respect they deserved."

Widener said anyone interested in helping locate veterans, or veterans themselves can call the high school at 405-222-6550.
