CHICKASHA — The children at Washita Valley Head Start in Chickasha ended the week with a powwow courtesy of a group of Native American dancers, singers and musicians.

Moses Starr Jr. played drums and sang as well as educated the group about Native American culture.

Starr demonstrated a variety of beats the dancers and clarified the real rhythms used as opposed to the "Hollywood" rhythm that the kids may have seen in movies.

Roy Bates and Starr sang traditional Native American songs, which had been memorized and passed down, rather than written down, Starr said.

Daniel Cloud, Addison Cloud and Ann Marie Cometsevah danced a variety of Native American dances for the group such as the chicken dance, war dance and round dance.

The teachers and students at Washita Valley Head Start were then invited to join Daniel, Addison, Cometsevah and Albert Littleman Jr., of Chickasha, to dance in a circle.
