ALEX — They came on foot and by car over the wet ground to the Alex School bell tower to honor the life of Cody Alexander.

Cody's loved ones huddled around the bell in the cold February wind to share memories, tears and laughter.

A family member said that while this was a sad occasion, Cody would not have wanted it to be all serious. Happy stories about the young man's life were told, resulting in a soft wave of knowing laughter among the crowd of mourners.

Cody's family repeatedly thanked everyone for coming to honor their son. An observation was made that it was times like this that one could appreciate living in a small town, because people really pull together during times of tragedy.

Cody was active at his church, the South Main Street Church of Christ, and his strong faith was discussed at his vigil.

"Anything that Cody learned about God, he tried to put into his life" … "We have no idea why God chose Cody, but we know one thing about Cody, he's with God now."

He was a senior in high school where he excelled at football, weight lifting, baseball and golf. He was a member of the FCCLA, TSA, PLC and skills USA. Cody also attended the Canadian Valley Technology Center in Chickasha where he studied drafting. He was named to the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. He was to be named the Salutatorian of the graduating class of 2013.

The 18-year-old died on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in a car accident.
