Candidates representing both parties for the general election met Aug. 7 in forum put on by the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce to debate state, national and local issues.
Local sheriff candidates Jim Weir ( R) and Jeff Franklin (D) went head-to-head over issues of department reform, position qualification and woking cooperatively with other judicial departments.
"As of right now we have a poor relationship with other police officers,
Franklin said. "Most other departments didn't want to work with us. We need to be courteous with them and try not step on their toes."
Weir, who currently serves as undersheriff, said the relationship between the departments were not nearly as bad as Franklin made it seem.
"They didn't want to work with us because our current sheriff wanted to do everything from within our department," he said. "We have only 12 deputies for 1,200 square miles. We need their help and they're ready to work with us."
