Something was definitely cooking this week near the Livestock Nutrition Center in Chickasha.
Police officers responded to a call in the area and found an operational moonshine still.
Detective Sgt. Traye Alexander discovered Center employee Ryan Keith Smith (29) was manufacturing the hooch.
"Smith admitted to operating the still and had apparently stolen the hardware to make the still from the facility (Livestock Nutrition Center) along with stealing the corn, yeast, molasses, and sugar to make the illegal alcohol from the manufacturer as well," said Alexander.
Although Alexander said Smith's intentions with the concoction remain unclear, he does know the device was unsafe.
"It's a pretty dry area and he was using open flames and pressurized devices only a block away from Lincoln Elementary," said Alexander. "We are not sure what he'd planned to do with it, but he did tell us it was an experiment."
This is the first time in his 15 years as a Chickasha police officer that Alexander said he has responded to a crime of this nature.
Smith was charged with the manufacture of alcohol. Two bottles of suspected moonshine whiskey was found at the scene and taken into evidence along with the components of the still.
