Cool, wet summer could mean rough winter

The cooler, rainy weather this summer has translated to fewer fires, but it may come with a price, Paulette Nicholas, Grady County Emergency Management Deputy, said at the regular Grady County Commissioners meeting.

Once the abundance of grass dies in the winter, so has the potential to provide plenty of fuel for dry winter fires, Dale Thompson, Grady County Emergency Management Director, said. In addition, mild summers sometimes mean that the winter will be especially cold or icy.

"It's kind of a catch 22 but we'll have to wait and see," Thompson said.

No unseasonably cool weather is expected this week. More hot and humid weather is the forecast thus far, Thompson said.

Thompson and Nicholas attended a southwest conference last week and focused on finishing the hazard mitigation plan. Grady County Emergency Management turned in their Hazard Mitigation Plan to FEMA. Thompson said they expect a quick turnaround from FEMA on this issue.

Calls to the fire department have remained low but there have been a few traffic accidents, Thompson said.

Minco Schools celebrated the upcoming groundbreaking at the site of the new high school on Highway 81 and Sager Road in Minco on Friday. The actual groundbreaking is to take place around January 2014.

Kevin Sims, Minco Schools Superintendent, attended the Grady County Commissioner's meeting to ask for  help with dirt work from the county. The price of dirt work is spiking due to the recent energy and oil boom, Sims said.

Windle Hardy, Grady County Commissioner said that this was within his district, District 1. He advised Sims to contact him as the project date draws closer.

Also on this week's agenda:

The sale of county property in Section 11-T4N and Section 16-T3N-R5W was approved. These properties are located in the Rush Springs area.
