An accident involving a semi tractor trailer killed the driver Monday afternoon when the vehicle veered off the southbound side of I-44 and through an overpass, bursting into flames.
The single-vehicle accident happened at mile marker 90 where county road 1300 passes over I-44 at around 3:15 p.m. The name of the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has not been released by Oklahoma Highway Patrol, pending notification of the family. Traffic in the right southbound lane was blocked off for more than two hours as crews cleaned up the wreckage and the crash scene was investigated.
Less than a mile before construction on I-44 begins, OHP Capt. Keith Williams said the tractor trailer went completely off the road, severing part of a guardrail to the west.
"You can see where he hit the guardrail, went through and down the embankment, and someone ended up going through the overpass," Williams said. "He ruptured a fuel tank along the way and that sparked a fire."
The cab of the tractor trailer was barely recognizable and wreckage was strewn across the field and shoulder of the road where it came to rest. Williams said OHP does not know exactly why the vehicle went off road, but "I think we have an idea."
A report on the accident is expected to be released later this evening.
