Chickasha man allegedly fled police, left son in car

CHICKASHA — A man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving his 18-month old son in the car while he fled police.

Chickasha Police Maj. Elip Moore said Michael Smith was stopped by police on Monday in the 500 block of S. 9th  Street and pulled over, but left the car and his son as soon as it stopped. Smith took off at a run behind a house and attempted to hide in a bush, Moore said.

After police caught Smith, Moore said officers noticed an odor of alcohol emanating from him, so he was asked to take a Breathalyzer test and refused.

Smith was found to be driving without a license and have a warrant out for his arrest, he said.

Moore said the child was probably released to a legal guardian.

Smith was arrested for child endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license, obstructing an officer, and defective equipment and taken to the Grady County Jail.
