A welfare check on a minor child lead to an arrest for alleged child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A Chickasha Police Officer was dispatched to a residence on a welfare check. The reporting party said Robert Young was smoking marijuana in the presence of a two-week old child.
The officer waked up to the front door which was cracked open. When he knocked on the door it opened up. The officer remained outside and called for someone to come to the door. He pushed the doorbell button but did not hear it ring. He knocked again on the outside door frame.
After about a minute, a male subject the officer knew to be Young came to the door. The officer told Robert why he was there.
The officer said he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from Young's person. When the officer told Young this, Young said he had smoked a cigarette but that was it.
The officer asked Young who was inside and Young responded that his son and "babies momma" was inside. The officer told Young they had a problem because he could smell marijuana and someone had reported there was marijuana smoking going on inside.
The officer asked Young if he had his permission to search the house and Young said "go ahead."
The officer asked Young where his baby was and Young led him to a room in the southeast portion of the house. The officer reported the room smelled strongly of burnt marijuana.
Inside the room the officer came into contact with an adult female who identified herself as Ayona Morrow. Morrow was holding an infant child.
During a search of the room, the officer found a metal grinder and scales in a plastic tub next to the bed where Morrow and the child were laying. The officer opened the grinder and saw a botanical substance that looked and smelled like marijuana.
When the officer asked Morrow why the room smelled like marijuana, she replied that she did not know. Then she admitted that Young had been smoking marijuana in the bedroom while she and the child were in it. She said she had covered the baby's face so the smoke would not bother him.
Young was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana in the presence of a child under 12 years of age and child abuse for maliciously failing to protect from harm a child under 18 years of age and possession of drug paraphernalia.
