Dunn's owners thank community after almost five decades of business

Dunn's Food Center owners Jerry and Kathy Mottinger said they are selling the Chickasha staple, so they can spend more time with their family.

"We've owned this store for 12 years," said Kathy. "We took it over after my father."

The location in downtown, which will open as Spencer's Jan. 6, has been in business for 34 years, said Kathy.

The Mottinger's echoed each other in their gratefulness toward Chickasha and its citizens.

"We have had so many loyal customers throughout the years," said Jerry. "They are more like friends than patrons."

Jerry said the generations that have worked at the store over the decades have become like family.

"We've had some amazing kids walk through that door," he said. "They have worked with us and their kids have ridden the horse out front, and then when they were old enough, also came to work with us."

Jerry said he and his wife plan to stay in Chickasha and will shop at Spencer's.

"I think they will do a good job supporting the community," said Kathy. "After many months of soul searching and prayer, we feel God has sent them to continue serving Chickasha as a locally owned grocer. We wish them all the blessings going forward."

Co-owner of Spencer's Jimmy Kemp said the transition should be seamless.

"We will keep pretty much the same hours, but we will be opening seven days a week in the future," Co-owner of Spencer's Jimmy Kemp said.

Spencer's is based out of Blanchard. The acquisition of Dunn's will be Spencer's second location.

Dunn's Food Center opened its first location 49 years ago.
