The holiday season can have its fair share of stress and chaos, and in the time of an economic crisis its no different. However, people in the community are pulling together to help the ones who need it the most.

There are several charitable organizations in Chickasha that focus on relieving some of the stress families go through during this time of year. The Salvation Army helps to provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need; Santa’s Workshop collects new toy donations so that parents can personally pick out a brand new item for their child; and there is also the Emergency Food Pantry which helps give food to those who need some assistance.

This year, the poor economy has affected the amount that need help.

“ The numbers have gone up 20 or 30 percent since last Christmas”, said Capt. Higdon of the Salvation Army. “A lot are losing jobs and they come to us for help.”

The Salvation Army works year long to provide families with basic needs, but gives seasonal assistance as well. The Red Kettle program, which is dedicated to helping people during Christmas, has brought in about $1,000 to $2,000 more than it did last year. “Hopefully it will help.” said Higdon.

The Salvation Army isn’t alone in recognizing the higher number of people requesting help this year. Malinda McQueen, treasurer of Santa’s Workshop, said, “We have definitely seen an increase in the number who need assistance, but we are still going to be able to help all those that need it.”

According to Norma Hayes, treasurer of Emergency Food Pantry, people of the community are realizing the increase in the number needing help and are doing what needs to be done. “Thank God people are still giving to those who need it most.” said Hayes.

The food pantry is located in the First Presbyterian Church and is open Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m.. to 4 p.m. If you are interested in donating, contact Edna Snow, store Manager and volunteer doordinator, at 222-2653.

To make a donation to Santa’s Workshop call Malinda McQueen 224-8256. If you wish to work with the Salvation Army and give back to the community, call 224-5647.
