Man fails to elude police; charged in burglary, assault

A simple break up turned to a drawn out ordeal, ending with a police chase on Friday.

Kendall Derrick Bennett was arrested in the Wal-Mart parking lot late Thursday night after a failed attempted to elude police, according to a Chickasha police report. Bennett was wanted for questioning in an alleged breaking and entering and assault.

Bennett's girlfriend had ended their relationship earlier in the day, sending Bennett into a rage. He is reported to have attacked a friend of his ex-girlfrriend with a baseball bat, breaking the mans arm. The ex-girlfriend told police that Bennet has a history of domestic abuse, and she had her friend check up on her.

Later in the evening, the girl was with two friends in the 1500 block of S. 11th Street. when Bennett arrived. He stood outside with a baseball bat, and when one of the friends tried to dissolve the situation things got worse.

According to police, Bennett followed his ex-girlfriend's friend to the back of the house. When he could not get inside the locked door, he began kicking it until it flew open.

Bennett is said to have stormed inside, but after being informed that the police had been called he left.

Later in the evening Bennett's ex and her friends left the residence at 1500 S. 11th, and were soon intercepted by Bennet. He began chasing them through the streets of Chickasha at a high rate of speed, grabbing the attention of Chickasha police. They pulled over his ex, and Bennett sat lying in wait.

After police helped Bennett's frightened ex-girlfriend they began looking for his vehicle.

An officer saw him on the east side of town, and began pursuit. Bennett took several turns at high speed in an attempt to get away, but by the time he reached Wal Mart police were hot on his tail.

Bennett stopped in the Wal-Mart parking lot, opened his door and threw his hands up.

Bennett denied the assault at first, but later admitted to it when police told him that the shoes he was wearing matched the footprint taken from the door he kicked in.

Bennett said that he only intended to use the bat for intimidation. Bennett told police the bat was in the back of his car, and on the rear floorboard sat a pink bat.

Bennett was arrested for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and first degree burglary. He was released over the weekend of $25,000 bail.
