For the third year in a row, Glenhaven Retirement Village residents have had the opportunity to enjoy Indian dancers from the Anadarko Public School program, American Indian Education, David Sullivan director.

The program began with American Indian Education secretary Pat Kopepasah singing the Lord’s Prayer and Danielle Bointy following along using hand gestures.

The group performed a number of dances, including the Dance of the Warriors and a two-step Pow Wow, ending with a Snake Dance.

Drummer Bill Koomsa accompanied each dancer.

“The drum is the heartbeat of Indian people,” said Kevin Poolaw, program tutor.

Glenhaven Activities Director Renny Cochran arranged the event to recognize November as Native American Heritage Month.

“We try to something to recognize different religions and ethnic backgrounds and to honor people for what they’ve done, like veterans,” said Cochran. “This is the way we kick off Thanksgiving.”

The student dancers, who make their own costumes, dance every weekend at Pow Wows around Oklahoma and out of state as well.
