Farmers’ Market is open

Karen Brady

After a weather-delay, Chickasha’s Farmers’ Market is in full swing.

Growers are now experiencing a good supply of produce and want to welcome the public to visit the market every Tuesday and Saturday morning from 7 a.m. until noon or sold out at the corner of 7th and Chickasha Ave.

Grady County Fairgrounds Marketing Director Peggy McMahan said the market was scheduled to open May 1, but heavy rains three weekends in a row prevented vendors from displaying their wares.

“Some vendors came out and tried to set up, but couldn’t because of the downpours,” said McMahan. “It was the end of May before we were able to open and now vendors are there on a regular basis and the amount of produce is continuing to grow.”

Starting with only two vendors in early May selling radishes and greens, the market now has 13 vendors ready to deliver the freshest, locally grown produce to their customers. A few of the items available at the market are potatoes, onions, squash, peppers, green beans and tomatoes.

McMahan also said the number of vendors continues to grow and that she averages about two calls a week from individuals interested in participating in the market.

“I look to see the number to continue to climb,” she said. “Growers were so late getting started, and apparently thought they weren’t going to get anything this year, but Mother Nature sometimes has a way of saying ‘be patient with me.’”

For information about exhibiting at the Chickasha Farmers’ Market, contact the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce at 405-224-0787 or the Grady County Fairgrounds at 405-224-2031. Booth space is $20 per season or $5 per day.
