CHICKASHA - A law enforcement pursuit ended in a violent collision last night, leaving a pair of vehicles mangled but no serious injuries.

At approximately 9 p.m., Deputy Steve Gilliam of the Grady County Sheriff’s Office pursued a champaign-colored Ford sedan northbound on 1st Street in Chickasha. When they reached the intersection at 1st and Florida Ave., the Ford rear-ended a Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Turner Berry, causing the truck to flip over multiple times before landing in a nearby lawn.

“I was heading home from Wal-Mart when all of a sudden, bam, I was flipping upside-down and hearing glass crack,” said Berry after returning from the emergency room to the scene of the accident. “Next thing I knew I was hanging out the driver’s side window, so I slid out on my belly. Then some fellow came running up to me and told me to stay lying down.”

The Ford slid forward several yards after the collision and jumped the curb where it’s sat with it’s front end mangled. A search found alcohol in the vehicle and a knife on the seat.

Berry returned to the scene holding his right hand as if injured, but only suffered minior injuries from the impact. His worst injury had actually occured eariler in the week.

“I was sure lucky to come out of there with only a few bruises,” he said. “The emergency room said I didn’t have any serious injuries nor broken bones. My back hurts a little and so does my hand though.” He raised his hand to show a deep U-shaped laceration being held together by stitches.

“I didn’t hurt my hand though in the wreck. I cut it chopping wood the other day. So this makes the second time I’ve had to go to the hospital this week. I better watch out, I guess.”

The Sheriff’s Office would not comment on the alcohol found in the vehicle, or what started the pursuit. County records show that Deputy Gilliam arrested Anthony Williams late last night and transported him to the Grady Couty jail. Williams was booked into the jail on complaints of eluding a police officer, leaving the scence of aa accident, driving under the influence, transporting an open container, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
