Minco and Chickasha High Schools had the lowest College-Remediation rates in Grady County County, according to reports from the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education for 2008.
College-remediation rates are figured by the percentage of college bound students from a particular high school that have to take a remediation course once they are excepted to the college.
The regents look at math, science, and English scores to determine if a student needs to complete a remedial course that typically is worth no credit.
The lower the score the better, and Minco was the lowest in the county at 25 percent, followed by Chickasha at 33.3 rate. Chickahsa has fluctuated from 30 to 35 percent over the past few years.
“I think it is important to keep a close eye on remediation rates and ACT scores. We are constantly striving to drive those rates lower while raising our ACT scores. I also try to see where we compare nationally, and throughout the state with other 5A schools,” said Superintendent of schools Jim Glaze.
“I’m happy to see that we have improved over last years 35 percent, and we will continue working with the regents to help make our rate better,” added Glaze.
Other schools in the county ranked accordingly, Tuttle 35.8, Bridge Creek 37.1, Am-Po 38.9, Alex 45.0, Ninnekah 60.0, with the highest being Verden at 63.6 percent.
Glaze also said this needs to be a joint effort that not only involves the school, but parents as well.
Out of the approximately 30 to 35 5A schools in the state; Chickasha has remained in the top 13 for the past three years. Deer Creek, Bishop Kelley, Durant, Ardmore, and Ada are typically in the top five in the state.
