A group of about a dozen concerned basketball parents showed up at Monday night’s Chickasha Board of Education meeting to express serious concerns about the state of the boys’ program. The group is calling for the termination of head coach Kelly Jobe because of what spokesman Tim Cook referred to as “conduct detrimental to the boys and the program.”
Since this was not an agenda item, Cook was allowed three minutes to speak for the group in open forum. He outlined their concerns to the Board and asked for the administration’s help in the matter.
Cook’s brief presentation included claims that Jobe was abusive in his interactions with the players. Jobe’s behavior was broadly described as morally and ethically wrong. Cook said later that the group had documentation to support some of their claims. The group said some parents are considering transfers to other districts, and claimed that mid-term transfers this year were a result of Jobe’s behavior.
By state law, the Board could not discuss or act on the parents’ concerns since it was a “non-agenda item.” School Board President John Gentry asked Superintendent Jim Glaze and Director of Secondary School Activities Yohance Brown to meet with the group as soon as possible and look into the matter.
Gentry said that Jobe’s name has been removed from the “re-hire” list until the issue is resolved. He expected Glaze and Brown to be in contact with the parents today to set up a meeting. If the meetings do not resolve the issue, A special board meeting will be scheduled so the board can directly a.dress the issue.
Jobe and school officials could not be reached for comment before press time.
