In playoff games, you look for your offensive leaders to step up, and for your defense to create turnovers.
For Rush Springs, both objectives were accomplished Friday in an, 44-14, win over Healdton at Joe Tunnell Stadium.
The win sends Rush Springs (10-1) to Mangum at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the second round of the Class A state playoffs. Healdton ends its season with a 7-3 record after placing third in Class A-3. Mangum (10-1) is coming off a 42-7 win over Mooreland.
It didn’t take long for Rush Springs to show Healdton and fans that there wouldn’t be a hangover from suffering its first loss of the season last week at Washington.
“We came out and executed everything we needed to,” Rush Springs senior Trent Parrish said. “Coming off the loss to Washington, it could have hurt us. We just came out here tonight and stepped it up. It was a good win that gained confidence for everybody.”
For all his success this season, senior running back Dustan McClenny may have saved his best game of the year for Healdton. McClenny ran for 228 yards in the game with two touchdowns, both coming in the first quarter to give Rush Springs control of the game.
“They have been on my back all week about being patient,” McClenny said. “I’ve been cutting back a lot this year. The guys were blocking good, and the holes were there. I just had to run.”
Along with McClenny, Redskins’ receiver Brian Loyd ran wild on the Bulldogs all night. Loyd finished the game with three touchdowns and 85 yards of total offense. Rush Springs finished the game with 452 total yards.
Healdton was limited to 177 yards of total offense in the game, averaging less than four yards per play. The Bulldogs also turned the ball over three times, with all three landing in the opportunistic hands of Parrish. The quarterback/safety had two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the playoff win.
The Redskins ran for 351 yards in the game, while passing for 101. Parrish went 5 of 7 with 94 yards through the air, while Loyd went 1-of-1 passing for seven yards.
