Glenhaven resident enjoys 100th birthday

Myrtle Bible says she feels fine being 100 years old.

Bible, a former school teacher, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday at Glenhaven Retirement Village in Chickasha.

About 30 friends, relatives and former students attended or sent flowers, plants, birthday cards and gifts to help celebrate Bible’s milestone birthday.

Bible was born in Kansas on Nov. 23, 1909 to Lily and Calvin Moyer. Her husband was the late Virgil Bible. The couple had no children, Bible says, because they “didn’t have time.”

“Just teaching school was a busy job,” Bible said.

As for whether she enjoyed teaching school, Bible says, “There were days you liked it and there were days you didn’t.”

Bible began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse, teaching English and other subjects in Alex, Anadarko, Tonkawa, Cement and Cyril.

A flower lover, Bible often sold and traded iris and had a back yard filled with flowers.

When asked by a well-wisher how it feels to be 100 years old, Bible replied, “I’m not. I’m 91.”
