Donated stove provides example of fancy 19th century designs

Editor's Note: This is part of on-going series that features artifacts at the Grady County Museum.

The Grady County Museum recently received a new wood and/or coal burning stove.

The stove stands about five feet tall and is in the main hallway of the Museum Building.

Made of all cast iron with ornate open work on all four sides, the stove features wings on the sides with grape designs on the bottom.

The stove, model # 160, was manufactured by the Bridge Beach Stove Company of St. Louis. It is a great example of the fancy designs used during the last half of the 19th century to provide decorative elements in the home.

The top, which is marked with the word “Superior,” is removal to provide access for heating a container and to the inside of the stove.

The stove was donated by Bennie Eads of the Verden Community and has received some refurbishing prior to its arrival at the Museum.

For additional information on Museum Holdings or for tours call 224-6480. The Museum is located in the “Dixie” Building at 415 W. Chickasha Avenue, Chickasha, OK.
