Museum features gallery treasure

One of the treasures in the main gallery of the Grady County Museum is a small writing desk or secretary.

The desk was a gift from the late Annie Hampton, who founded the Grady County Historical Society in 1973.

Made from cherry wood, the desk was a family heirloom that was passed down through the generations. According to family legend, the Choctaw Nation Constitution was signed on the desk.

Shown with the desk are documents and a book relating to the land holdings of the Choctaw Nations. One document is titled "Patent -- United States of America to Choctaw Nation."

Also included are abstracts of sales and mortgages of land. The book displayed is the "Supplement to Choctaw-Chickasaw Deeds and Allotments."

Included in the display is a circa 1905 stained glass window from a church building in the Verden area. The chair placed with the desk is from the offices of the Rock Island Deport.

The items are on view from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact museum volunteers at 224-6480 for more information.
