Some of Chickasha’s history is being uncovered this week as New Life Christian Church continues work on the old Homeland building. New Life recently purchased the building on Minnesota between 5th and 6th Streets which had formerly served as Safeway and Homeland grocery stores. As the new roof was installed and the facade was removed, the old lettering from the former Safeway store was revealed. Safeway opened the store in the late 1950s.
The current work is part of phase one, which includes the initial land and buildiing purchase and cleaning the building’s interior. The actual renovation and rebuilding will be done in phase two and includes a tentative layout for a 550-seat sanctuary. The church hopes to move into the renovated 20,000 square foot building within a few years.
