When was the last time you took the rocking chair test? What, you don’t know what the rocking chair test is? This is an easy test to evaluate your path in life, let me explain.
A few years back I came across this term, “the rocking chair test” which is basically this analogy, imagine yourself in your twilight years, sitting out on the front porch in a rocking chair just thinking of the years gone by. By now your long life has come to a close and you are left alone with only your memories of all the years gone by.
You are too old now to make any changes and your mind is filled with all the regrets that come rushing in, taking over your thoughts, making you feel angry and depressed for not doing, saying or becoming all the things that you let pass by years before.
I don’t know about you, but it saddens me when I hear older people and sometimes not so old people, tell me of their stories of regrets. You know, the I wish I would have done . . . or things would be different for me now if I had only. . . Man, I let her or him get away, if I only said or did . . . and the stories go on and on.
Sure we all make mistakes, that’s how we grow and learn, but how do we evaluate our decisions on current and upcoming events in our lives and decide which actions to take on the things we have control over? The answer is simple, the rocking chair test.
When you have to make an important decision on something, take a moment and ask yourself the following question, “can I live in good conscience with the decision I am about to make?” If the answer is “yes“, then you are in good shape. If the answer is “no” or “I don’t know” then you need to take a little more time before you make your decision.
Most things only seem urgent and have to be made right now, the reality is that you do have time to think things over before you rush into a hasty decision or action.
Now you probably have heard of the bucket list right? You know a list of all the things that you would like to do before you die. How long are you going to wait before you start making one and or start taking action on these important goals and dreams? When you use the rocking chair test in regards to your bucket list of things to do, you become a little more clear and urgent on the importance of these wishes and desires.
My friends, we only have so long on this earth and I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want to have a bunch of regrets in the end. I would rather have tons and tons of great memories to share with others and to reminisce on when all my action taking days are through.
You deserve to have a tremendously fulfilling life, so begin utilizing the rocking chair test daily and start taking positive action towards creating a life that you will be proud of complete with great stories yet to be told.
To Your Success!
