It seems that the beginning of a new year always brings those wonderful feelings of renewal, hope and an overwhelming desire to make new changes in our lives. We make resolutions, we tell ourselves I’m not going to give up this time and we get ourselves pumped up to finally make those changes that we know need making or we decide to set out on achieving those dreams and desires that we have, for whatever reason, have been putting on the back burner for quite some time now.
Does this sound familiar? Sure it does, we all do it. The key thing is how many of us will lose our motivation and give in or give up on our resolutions by say March or April?
Most resolutions simply do not last because we either haven’t conditioned or disciplined ourselves to do the “hard work” needed or want to muster up the indomitable spirit to stay the course long enough to see them through.
As I have written about in a previous column, we must reach a point called “threshold” in order to truly make a difference in our lives. Threshold is the point when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired of how things currently are and deep down in the pit of your stomach become determined to make a difference or die trying. When you reach threshold, all things are possible.
I get a lot of people coming to my studio this time of year to join my fitness programs that I offer. They have set as one of their New Year’s resolutions to get in shape and lose the excess pounds and tone up. Now it’s not just me that is getting all the business, across the country people are rushing into gyms and fitness facilities by the millions for the same reason.
Why now, why not all year long? Like mentioned above, this time of year brings on those feelings of change. We want to see those changes manifest in our lives. We want to feel good again. We hate the way we look naked in the mirror. We got to do something about it now!
So we get pumped, we say to ourselves “I’m going to go for it and do it for real this time” and we either go join a gym or purchase a DVD workout at Wal-Mart or better yet, buy one of those workout videos off the television that are pounded into our subconscious minds daily through infomercials. We then get started with full intentions of making the change in our lives.
Then life gets in the way, the sore muscles kick in, the realization that this is going to take longer than I thought comes to mind and before we know it, we are just about ready to give up. Over the course of the next few columns, I am going to give you some tips on how to stay motivated and some guidelines on how to finally get in shape and reach your health and fitness goals for real this year.
