— Have you ever considered giving a one year period a theme or a mission or an overall goal for yourself to accomplish something remarkable or outstanding?  I’m not talking about a New Year’s resolution mind you; I speak of an entire year devoted to achieving a driven purpose.  If so, then you are one in a million and a stand out among the crowd of mediocrity which is the norm.

If you have been reading my past columns, you probably can gather that I am an avid goal seeker and strive to be a powerful, positive influence in the lives of everyone I come in contact with, helping them to expand their thinking and to push themselves out of the realm that most people call average.

At my martial arts studio, the theme for our year was “Going Beyond Excellence in 2010”.  Going beyond excellence correlates to changing the way you look at, participate in and what kind of affect you are having upon others in your day to day life and making a deliberate commitment to making things better than they have ever been before.

How can you do this?  Well first off you have to focus on the one thing you can change in life, you.  You can’t change other people, you can try to influence them, but you cannot change others if they do not want to be changed.  So if you want to go beyond excellence, place your primary focus on cleaning up your past habits, attitudes and opinions and giving yourself a complete and much needed makeover.

First off, spend a little time thinking and listing the things that you would like to change about yourself so that it better aligns with your theme or goal for the next year or 12 month period.  The time frame is crucial because you must stay focused on your goal and give it a deadline when it is to be achieved or completed.

Next draw up a task specific plan pointing how you are going to acquire these new habits, skills and attitudes, then get to work and take massive action starting NOW and not later.

You have to have some accountability, so tell everyone you know about what you are doing. In doing so, you will feel a little pressure to stay on course and stay committed.

This is a very powerful step and must not be left out.

Whatever your personal theme is, whether it is based on working to build a healthier, better looking body, going back to school to upgrade your knowledge base, improving your relationships, acquiring a higher paying job, or in my student’s case, the achievement of becoming a Black Belt, the theme must mean something deep down to you or it will never materialize it past just a fanciful thought or dream that you had one day.

My friend, you are the master of your own destiny, start changing it now for the better.  Like I tell my students, become the change that you would like to see in the world.  If you do, you will become one in a million.

To your success!
