The New Normal

Gary Rogers, pastor, Grand Assembly of God

— We are praying for the people who have suffered the tragic results of hurricane Sandy.

A phrase I have heard from people interviewed and news reporters alike is, “This is the new normal.”  With this brief statement then came details of how life drastically changed for those in the path of this devastating storm.  Gas stations where cars would line up to make their purchase, now have people standing in lines buying gasoline for generators.  The customary commute to work on a subway is now a scramble to find an alternate means of transportation.  The beautiful beach front properties with their breath-taking views are now piles of rubble and testimonies of a hurricane’s destructive force.

“The New Normal” speaks of people’s capacity to adapt.  They are saying, “This is what we have to deal with now.”  “This is what it looks like now.”  “These are the challenges of daily life now.”  It is a realistic understanding of the fact that the way things were is over and now this is normal everyday living.

Other phrases associated with this new normal are found in how people described the events.  Over and over people said things similar to, “Devastation like never before”.  “A storm like we have never seen before.”  “Nothing like this has happened before.”  “Worse than anything in recorded history.”  To usher in the new normal was a catastrophic event of incomparable magnitude.

In scripture Jesus described end time events with similar phrases.  Matthew 24:7 – “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.”  Matthew 24:12 – “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,”  Matthew 24:21 – “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now — and never to be equaled again.” NIV

Earthquakes in various places refers to wide spread.  There will be earthquakes in places that never had one.  It will be like never before.  Wickedness increasing means the condition is worse than it has been before.  Great distress unequaled points to worse than anything in recorded history.

The new normal is the challenge we are living with today.  End time events are being fulfilled at such an incredible rate that they have become “The New Normal”.  Last Saturday there was an earthquake in Prague, Oklahoma and in Canada.  Then Monday evening Sandy hit land.  Are we adapting to this new normal that we don’t recognize what is happening?  “It has never been like this.”  Can you hear what it being said?  It should get our attention!  Jesus is coming back soon!

I prayed for you, PG
