Minco officer stabbed while responding to threats from self proclaimed anti-christ

MINCO — A Minco police officer was stabbed in the shoulder and the back of the head today while investigating a report made by school counselor.

The officer responded to reports of a suspect in a house on State Highway 37 between Minco and Tuttle who claimed he was the anti-christ, and was going to burn his home down with his family in it, according to Lisa Hatchett, public information officer for the Grady County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect was identified as Russell Mason(35).

Following the stabbing, the officer shot Mason in the leg.

Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir also responded to the scene.

Weir said when he arrived the officer was on his knees and the suspect was on his stomach.

"The officer just looked up and told me, 'I shot him,'" said Weir. "My initial thought was, he(Mason) was dead."

Weir said he made efforts to relax the officer when Mason stuck his head up and started shouting. Weir responded by cuffing Mason.

A few minutes later, Mason rose to his feet and started walking toward Weir and the injured officer.

"I ran over and attempted to take him to the ground," said Weir. "He responded by sweeping my leg out from me, but I managed to maintain my balance and take him down with my elbow in his back."

Weir sustained a muscle tear in his right leg during the scuffle.

The Minco Police Department did not release the name of the injured officer by press time. Weir said he was unsure of the officer's condition.

Undersheriff Rusty Pyle said the knife used to stab the officer was bent at the end indicating the blade hit the skull.

Mason was taken into custody and charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
