1 killed in head-on turnpike collision

CHICKASHA — A head-on collision resulted in the death of one man last night on IH-44 near mile marker 85.

Raymond Meeks (53) of Cyril was killed after he collided with Issa Gakwandi, according to a report from Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

OHP Trooper Brad Lovelace said Meeks was traveling westbound in eastbound lanes when he hit Gakwandi. Lovelace said an investigation showed Meeks ability was impaired due to alcohol consumption.

Meeks was transported by mediflight to the OU Medical Hospital where he later died of injuries sustained during the collision.

Gakwandi did not suffer any injuries from the accident, according to the report.

The incident occurred close to the McDonald's on IH-44.
